Battle Report: Space Wolves vs Tau

Had a wonderful game against Space Wolves today(5th Dec 2009), 1750pts. He had the following roughly…

HQ
01 Rune Priest (Murderous Intend, Living Lightning)
01 Wolfguard Battle Leader (Frost-blade, Bike)
01 Wolfguard Battle Leader (Frost-blade, Bike)

ELITE
04 Wolfguard (03 Combi-melta, 01 Powerfist/pistol, 01 Drop pod)
01 Dreadnought (Assault cannon, Heavy flamer, Drop pod)

TROOP
09 Grey Hunter (Flamer)
05 Grey Hunter (Razorback: Heavy Bolter)
05 Grey Hunter (Rhino)

FAST ATTACK
05 Bloodclaw Bikers (Sgt with Powerfist, 01 Melta-gun, 01 Attack bike with Heavy bolter)
05 Bloodclaw Bikers (Sgt with Powerfist, 01 Attack bike with Heavy bolter)

HEAVY SUPPORT
01 Vindicator
05 Long Fangs (04 Missile Launcher)
01 Land Raider

– Battle leader each lead a bike squad.
– 03 Combi-melta Wolfguard in Drop pod.
– 01 Power-fist Wolfguard attached to 09 man Grey Hunters, and all embarked into Land Raider.
– Rune Priest attached to 05 man Grey Hunter in Rhino.

Tau Deployment

Mission: Annihilation
Deployment: Pitch Battle

Highlights

  • Space Wolves won roll and deployed into 1 corner of the board.
  • Tau deployed on opposite far corner. This effectively neutralized Longfang’s Missile Launcher range of 48″.
  • Using kroots to form a 6″ bubble around my units to deny drop podding melta-gun getting into effective range but atlas, on 2nd turn I forgot about it and moved Hammerhead out of bubble and promptly got melta to death by Drop podded Wolfguards.
  • Managed to block traffic using Piranha and effectively stopped Vindicator from doing anything whole game. Vindicator got destroyed at turn 3.
  • Crisis suit plasma gun did almost nothing whole game but missile pod did everything. Forcing armor saves on the Bloodclaw bikers till they fail and wiped.
  • Mistake that Wolves did was not to present multiple threat at the same time. Had 01 unit within threat range at one time thus I am able to focus fire and wipe 01 unit at a time.
  • Overall Tau managed to destroy everything by turn 5 except 2 transport, 3 squads of Grey Hunters and last wolf from Longfangs. Wolves were retreating to deny more KP to tau.
  • Since turn 5 till turn 7, have been trying to destroy that Razorback but unable. Broadsides fail to hit for 2 turns( twin linked BS4, fail.) or rolled 1 or 2 on pen rolls. Dang it.

Game ended with Space Wolves earning 6KP(01 Hammerhead, 01 Piranha, 01 Gun Drones from Piranha, 01 Kroots, 01 Devilfish & 01 Firewarriors) while Tau has 10KP(02 Battle leaders, 02 Bloodclaw bikers, 02 Drop pods, 01 Dreadnought, 01 Wolfguard squad, 01 Land Raider & 01 Vindicator).

Had a wonderful post game discussion. The next time we meet, the Wolves would definitely evolved into a better army. Till next time.

  1. I will be fighting a 750 game against Space Wolves soon. He plans to bring Razorbacks and I’m not sure about a drop pod yet. I plan to use:

    HQ
Fireknife Crisis Shaes’el Plasma Rifle, Missile Pod, Targeting Array, HW Multi-Tracker

    ELITE
Crisis Fireknife Plasma Rifle, Missile Pod, Targeting Array, HW Multi-Tracker
Crisis Fireknife Plasma Rifle, Missile Pod, Targeting Array, HW Multi-Tracker

    TROOPS
8 Firewarriors 6 Pulse Carbine, 6 Pulse Rifle, Bonded
8 Firewarriors 6 Pulse Carbine, 6 Pulse Rifle, Bonded

    HEAVY SUPPORT
Hammerhead Railgun, Smart Missile System, Multi Tracker, Disruption Pods

    FAST ATTACKS
Piranha Fusion Blaster, Targeting Array, Disruption Pods
Piranha Fusion Blaster, Targeting Array, Disruption Pods

  2. If I may suggest, your list is not playing to Tau strength in 5th edition. If I may suggest the following assuming you have all the models needed:

    01 Shas’El (Missile Pod/Targeting Array/Target Lock, HW BSF)
    04 XV15 Stealth (Burst Cannon)
12 Fire Warriors (Pulse Rifle, Bonded)
12 Fire Warriors (Pulse Rifle, Bonded)
01 Piranha (Fusion, Targeting Array, Disruption Pod)
01 Piranha (Fusion, Targeting Array, Disruption Pod)
02 XV88 Broadside (TL Railgun/SMS, ASS, Teamleader, HW Target Lock)

Attach Shas’El into Broadsides. Shoot 3 targets per turn. Stealths are included instead of Crisis is because you have enough anti-vehicle weapon and you need more anti-infantry.

Hope helps. All the best in your coming game!
