Army List: Tyranids Reserves Strike

Another list building exercise.

In the Tyranid army, the elite slot has probably the best units in the whole Tyranids codex. The top contenders are naturally Hive Guards and Zoanthropes. I have 3 Zoanthropes model thus I would like to think of an army that can properly field them.

As such, I will include 4 Zoanthropes in the list. A deathleaper will be included to help with psychic defense. To get the Zoanthropes in a good position, Mycetic spore is a must. Mycetic spore are kinda useless after it deep strike, I would give the spores Cluster Spines. Thus I have
02 Zoanthrope, Mycetic pod (Cluster spines).
02 Zoanthrope, Mycetic pod (Cluster spines).
01 Deathleaper

480points.

Now to make sure the Zoanthropes comes in on turn 2, Hive Tyrant with hive commander upgrade is needed. To make full use of the reserves nature of the list, wings are given to allow it to deepstrike. I realize that there is plenty of missile launchers that opponents can field, a 2+ save is needed. Thx to eriochrome for pointing out that Tyrant can only choose 1 between Wings and Armored Shell, can’t give Tyrant 2+ save. To keep him cheap not gonna give the Tyrant anymore stuffs. 😀 Have considered taking heavy venom cannon and devourers for the Tyrant but I feel to be viable for anti-tank and anti-infantry, taking 02 pairs of Scything Talon is the best. Rolling 6s to hit on vehicles should help a lot.
01 Hive Tyrant (02 Scything Talon, Hive Commander, Wings | Psychic Scream, Paroxysm)
01 Hive Tyrant (02 Scything Talon, Hive Commander, Wings | Psychic Scream, Paroxysm)

510points. (Whoa… expensive)

Now to add a bit more of anti armor shooting, the best candidate is Harpies. It has wings thus Harpy can deepstrike also.
01 Harpy (TL Heavy Venom Cannon, Cluster Spines)
01 Harpy (TL Heavy Venom Cannon, Cluster Spines)

340pts.

So at this moment I have already used 480+510+340=1330pts. This leaves 420pts.

I still lack troops. Termagants are out since they need synapse . Genestealers seems to fill the need. If there is a need, Genestealers can outflank and that is another unit that can make use of reserves. To give the genestealer more punch in CC, I’m going give them toxin sacs.
06 Genestealer ( Toxin Sacs)
06 Genestealer ( Toxin Sacs)
06 Genestealer ( Toxin Sacs)
06 Genestealer ( Toxin Sacs)

408pts. Left 12pts. Hmm… give 1 Genestealer brood scything talons to burn up the points.

With that, this all adds up to 1750pts (480+510+340+420). In summary,

HQ
01 Hive Tyrant (02 Scything Talon, Hive Commander, Wings | Psychic Scream, Paroxysm)
01 Hive Tyrant (02 Scything Talon, Hive Commander, Wings | Psychic Scream, Paroxysm)
ELITE
02 Zoanthrope, Mycetic pod (Cluster spines).
02 Zoanthrope, Mycetic pod (Cluster spines).
01 Deathleaper
TROOP
06 Genestealer ( Toxin Sacs, Scything Talon)
06 Genestealer ( Toxin Sacs)
06 Genestealer ( Toxin Sacs)
06 Genestealer ( Toxin Sacs)
FAST ATTACK
01 Harpy (TL Heavy Venom Cannon, Cluster Spines)
01 Harpy (TL Heavy Venom Cannon, Cluster Spines)

Whole army deepstrikes in on turn2 at 2+. Genestealers may outflank or infiltrate depends on mission. Generally, Genestealers are my campers. Assume everything comes in on turn 2, will deploy Tyrants first so that they are safe from mishaps chance. Than deepstrike harpies a little away. Lastly the Mycetic spores, deploy them at a spot to try give Hive Tyrant cover saves.

With the sudden appearance of so many targets, I hope to flood the opponent with many targets. Zoanthropes are good armor buster or AP3 blast, Hive Tyrants hopefully can put some wounds with psychic scream. We all know what he can do. Having 02 scything talons should help the Tyrant chasing down vehicles. Deathleaper can try rear armor shots with his str6 shots. What will they shoot???!!! 😀

All my MCs are I5 too. No easy meat for Jaws of World Wolf. (win!)

Finally, an army that I can bring the fight to the enemy. Hope I touch base with everything.

Just another random army list building exercise.

  1. Some people might argue with you on the deepstriking from wings on MC’s but that will probably be cleared up in the FAQ in a few months.

You cannot take Armored Shell and Wings the army list says pick one.

Also I think that the Harpies might be better off with the stranglethrons. You already have zoans for heavy anti tank and the flying tryants can get annoying skimmers/light tanks better than the venom cannon probably. You are very light on volume of shots firepower where the larger blasts can come in handy and the clusterspines can be used on the same target.

The stranglethorns allow you to blast normal units that might be in cover who you might want to assault with the harpie since it unlike most of the other things can assault into cover. Then the next turn clear the exposed units out with the stealers.

    1. Thx for pointing out Tyrant can’t take armored shell and wings. What a pity. Will edit the post. Thx.
